Academic Responsibility as Rome Burns

Humane Deliberation in Times of Exigency

West Texas A&M University Distinguish Lecture Series

September 25, 2025 (Republished from Eli Kramer’s Substack)

This lecture explored the tension between the slow, reflective processes of academic life and the urgent demands of social and political crisis. As universities face intensifying precarity, I argued for the importance of small-scale, humane academic enclaves as sites of civic responsibility and local resilience. Rather than grand solutions, the talk calls for grounded, deliberative practices that preserve spaces for thought, care, and action—even as those very spaces come under threat.
